Educating Our Parents: Understanding the St. Francis District Curriculum

St. Francis’ engineering curriculum helps high school students build a strong understanding of how technological systems function. Learners gain the ability to describe how technological systems fail due to design errors or misuse. Students learn how to troubleshoot such problems in order to get various technological systems working as they were intended. A study of electrical systems is undertaken, with students learning how transducers send electrical signals and how to conduct voltage tests. They work on calculating the load placed on technological components to determine static, dynamic, and tension forces acting upon them.

The theatre education curriculum in St. Francis focuses on helping students acquire the necessary skills to engage in theatrical productions with proficiency. In elementary school, students get comfortable with basic acting principles by using their imaginations. Learners pretend to be someone else and create characters for other actors to portray. Basic costume design and construction principles are introduced as well. Movement on stage is discussed, with children acquiring an understanding of how a more dynamic performance is provided by moving to different areas of the stage and engaging with different sections of the audience.

Chalk Talk: Unconventional Reasons Why Kids Should Read More

Reading and reading often has many benefits for students. It is well documented that the more a child reads, the better they perform in all subjects in school. But there are unconventional benefits to reading often as well. Reading is an excellent activity to calm a child’s mind. Getting involved in a book can help kids relieve stress, even more so than listening to music or light exercise. There is an association between reading and the development of empathy as well. Even after just one week of reading each day, participants in research studies demonstrate increased empathy for others. Additionally, reading has long-term benefits that keep the mind sharp. Studies show that as people age, those that engage in mentally stimulating activities like reading have a much lesser chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
