Educating Our Parents: Understanding the St. Joseph District Curriculum

At St. Joseph School District, the Language Arts elementary curriculum coaches students to recognize context clues, develop a sharp vocabulary, and enjoy reading and writing as a process rather than a chore. Group discussion and individually-tailored teacher mediation helps students formulate their own opinions, while laying the foundation for upper grade text analysis. Thesis-based writing, as well as a deeper, more nuanced exploration of text, is a key component of preparing students for college-level writing and reading tasks.

Problem solving and number recognition in early math sets the stage for higher level thinking, applying mathematical models to everyday situations. Monetary skills and number sense is imparted in elementary grades. Geometry, algebra, statistics and calculus broaden the scope of mathematical applications and a number of technological electives encourage an interest in math careers. Data analysis, probability and statistics are taught as predictive tools for students to use.

Chalk Talk: Muscles: Our Everyday Mechanical Marvels

The muscles in our body are amazing machines. Each muscle fiber holds a contractile potential that has a pulling force, moving our skeletal framework and performing tasks with ease. Each muscle performing a movement is known as a prime mover or agonists. Stabilizing muscles that support the prime mover muscle are known as synergists. Just like in dramatic fiction, muscles that perform the opposite movement to an agonist—for example, the muscle that relaxes while the agonist contracts—are known as antagonists. Tendons connect muscles to bones; one of the easiest-to-find examples of a tendon is our Achilles tendon, located at the back of your heel. It pulls tight when you bend your foot. Your biceps brachii muscle, the muscle you can feel on your upper arm when you bend your arm into a curl, pulls to decrease the angle of your arm bones from 180 degrees. This means the biceps brachii is a flexor muscle. The biceps antagonist, known as the triceps brachii, is located on the opposite side of your arm; it increases the angle of your arm back to 180 degrees, acting as an extensor muscle. Basic actions can truly be lessons in physics, math application, and biomechanics.
