Starksville District and Curriculum

Starkville Public Schools use the Common Core Standards to prepare their students for the future. These standards allow the students to have a balanced education while allowing the teachers some freedom in how to present their subject matter. The standards follow major topics within each subject over the course of elementary and secondary education so that students gain a deep understanding of the major aspects of each core subject.

We currently cover the following Starksville-area school district: Starkville School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Starksville District Curriculum

The Scott Foresman ‘Reading Street’ is used in the Starkville Public School to teach Language Arts. In kindergarten the children learn the way that words are used, both in talking and in reading. They also learn phonics so that when they see a word they do not know, they can sound it out. They are provided with books for the classroom and independent reading, as well as other material to push their education forward through the use of technology. The reading skills they develop are then spread throughout other courses.

The schools use Singapore Math which in the lower grades teaches children math in concrete, abstract and pictorial ways. Beginning with manipulatives, then moving on to pictures and finally by using abstract thinking, these children progress through math. As they attend junior high, they use concrete, pictorial and visual representations, such as number lines, to learn math. After mastery the students begin to use symbolic ways of working with equations.

Chalk Talk: How to Write a Thesis Statement

A thesis statement tells the reader the kind of report they are going to read: analytical, expository, or argumentative. Before a student writes their thesis statement, they need to know the direction they want their paper to go. After this is decided, create a specific statement that talks about what will be in the paper. Generally, the thesis is at the end of the first paragraph. Finally, as a student writes a paper, their topics may change, with this in mind, the thesis statement may need to be revised during the writing.
