Stayton District and Curriculum

The North Santiam School District uses the Common Core State Standards and state-development curricular frameworks to provide a comprehensive educational experience for its students. The Common Core implementation has impacted the teaching and learning process in English Language Arts and Math so as to focus in on fewer topics and do so in a way that deepens students knowledge in them over their school years. Academic frameworks in other subjects follow the same design.

We currently cover the following Stayton-area school district: North Santiam School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Stayton District Curriculum

Students are not expected to merely read, however. They are expected to research, write about, and discuss the texts they read. Through the use of workshops, students learn how to be, not only readers, but interpreters of literary work, then to use what they learn in their written work. This will help them become more discerning readers who are able to evaluate a range of texts from varying genres.

In math, students begin learning about whole numbers and concrete shapes in the earliest grades. From there, the curriculum introduces students to algebra- and geometry-based concepts that span all grades. Students learn important mathematical concepts early, and then go on to further refine and develop their knowledge as they put it to use in practical way. By building these concepts from grade-to-grade, students develop a more sophisticated understanding of mathematic concepts and prepare themselves for the more abstract mathematics that they will have to tackle in the higher grades.

Chalk Talk: Kindergarten Readiness

The kindergarten experience is the foundation for years to come, and having young children ready to transition into their schooling is an integral part of early childhood. Schools will hold events to familiarize families with the kindergarten routine and learning expectations, and parents may be asked to complete Social Emotional and Cognitive Readiness questionnaires that will help to guide a sense of what is to come and what a child should be prepared for. A child who just turned five years old may not be ready for full-day kindergarten, especially if he/she is not used to being away from his/her parents. Parents know their children best and should not be overly swayed by outside opinions on this issue. Another factor that comes into play is whether the school offers half- or full-day kindergarten.
