Sterling Heights District and Curriculum

Most of Sterling Heights is served by Utica Community Schools which operates over 20 elementary schools and a dozen middle and high schools. UCS receives strong community support which has allowed it to continually upgrade its buildings and technology over the past ten years. This district also offers several challenging programs, including the Utica Academy for International Studies. Parts of Sterling Heights is also served by Warren Consolidated Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sterling Heights District Curriculum

Utica Community Schools offers students a challenging curriculum. Beginning in elementary school, students are taught to take responsibility for their own learning. Literacy instruction at this level includes a focus on comprehension and vocabulary plus learning research and effective study skills. The focus of mathematics instruction is on real-world applications and problem-solving.

The high school curriculum is even more challenging and has more options. The district offers curriculum based on six different career pathways like Health Management or Business, Marketing, and Technology. Each career pathway includes coursework required by the Michigan Department of Education and electives that prepare students for continuing studies in college. With traditional coursework and innovative programs, Utica Community Schools provides rigorous academics to students with a wide array of interests.

Keeping Informed: Recent Sterling Heights Educational News

  • Utica Academy for International Studies - The first graduating class of the Utica Academy for International Studies, a challenging academic program operated by Utica Community Schools, received their diplomas in 2013. The program has received national recognition as the most challenging in the state of Michigan and it also offers several overseas trips to students.
  • Espirit de Corps - Eisenhower High School’s yearbook, called Espirit de Corps, won national recognition for excellence from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The yearbook staff works during the summer months as well as the school year to create their award-winning publication.
  • "Where Innovation Meets Design" - In an event called “Where Innovation Meets Design,” General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler visited Utica Community Schools to give students the chance to talk with automotive designers and engineers. The Big Three companies also brought vehicles so students could get a first-hand look at the results of the design process.
