Sterling District and Curriculum

Wachusett Regional School District is a large district comprised of twelve schools and over 7,400 students. The mission of WRSD is providing high-quality teaching for students to achieve academic excellence and social development in order to fulfill their potential. WRSD’s core curriculum is centered on the following three statements about learning: “reading is thinking,” “writing is decision-making,” and “math is problem-solving.” In order to integrate these three truths into daily instruction, the district operates under a “workshop” model, which is a structured comprehensive approach to learning that cultivates understanding.

We currently cover the following Sterling-area school district: Wachusett Regional School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sterling District Curriculum

WRSD is also committed to 21st century learning, helping foster the necessary skills students need to succeed in college and their careers in a global society. In order to instill 21st century learning, the district has been involved in an initiative called the AIM21 campaign. Through this, students are exposed to digital leaning tools in all classes and content areas. The district’s professional development is built around an instructional coaching approach that allows teachers to take what they gathered in workshops and apply it in their classrooms.

The district has implemented an initiative that commits to continually approving the literacy curriculum. A balanced literacy approach is used, and literacy blocks include reader’s and writer’s workshops, phonics and word study, read alouds, literacy assessments, and support for the MCAS state exam. The district also uses a math workshop that addresses the needs of all students. These workshops begin with a focused lesson during which the teacher explicitly models specific skills; after that, students work on the skill(s)—problem solving—independently.

Flags from around the world adorned the school, and students were treated to an international menu for lunch.
  • Wachusett Coaches Get Certified in CPR, Defibrillator Use - Fifty-five Wachusett middle and high school coaches recently underwent training and became fully certified in CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators. Chalk Talk: What Do Guidance Counselors Do?

Although guidance counselors do not have classrooms or teach regular classes, they play in integral role in the fabric of the school. As their title suggests, guidance counselors provide guidance to students--both in terms of academics as well as outside issues. Guidance counselors help students choose which courses to take and put together class schedules. They coordinate students' college applications and essays and send them out to universities. They talk with and provide advice to students about their college and career pathways. Guidance counselors are very different than teachers insofar as students come to them to discuss issues outside of academics. Students may talk to their counselors about divorce or other issues at home, bullying, problems with romantic relationships or friends, peer pressure-related behaviors, etc. They also frequently mediate conflicts between two or more students. Guidance counselors serve students at all levels from K-12.
