Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Stewartville District Curriculum

Stewartville’s science curriculum introduces students to concepts related to the physical sciences. In middle school, learners investigate matter. Students learn about dissolving, density, compression, and diffusion, as well as other attributes of matter. The ways in which matter can change phase or shape as a result of dissolving are examined as well. Conservation of mass is also studied, with learners identifying the ways in which mass is conserved during a physical change. Learners also acquire an understanding of the physical processes underlying melting, condensation, freezing, and evaporation.

Students in the English language arts curriculum acquire skills related to reading informational texts. Learners develop a larger vocabulary that includes everyday words as well as those that are domain-specific. Students also learn how to describe the overall structure of an informational text, including how the author presents events, ideas, and concepts. First hand and second hand experiences are compared and contrasted, with students developing the tools needed to determine the legitimacy of second hand accounts of an event.

Chalk Talk: Pros and Cons of Skipping a Grade

If you’ve got a child that demonstrates advanced intellectual abilities, skipping a grade may be a viable option. Children that operate at a higher level than their peers can grow bored of lessons that don’t challenge them, thus the advantage of advancing that child more quickly. He or she can find academic stimulation in studies that are more rigorous than that which they are used to. However, skipping a grade puts children in the situation of entering a class in which they know no few children, and in which their new classmates are a full year older than they are. Aside from these social considerations, children that skip a grade face the disadvantage of being less physically and emotionally mature. It is important for parents to take these factors into consideration when making a decision about advancing their child in his or her education.
