Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Strasburg District Curriculum

The geometry strand of the mathematics curriculum at Shenandoah County Public School begins with students learning basic shapes, then seeing where they can find these shapes in their world. Students go on to identify two- and three-dimensional figures as well as solving measurements pertaining to these shapes. They learn how to find the perimeter, volume, and mass as well as radius and diameter of circles. These students, in high school, can expand their geometry skills by taking classes pertaining to this subject.

Science is seen in the world around the children at Shenandoah County Public School. Students begin by examining plants and seasons, then they go on to study adaptations in animals, ecology and biology of plants and animals. In high school, the students can then study one of these areas at a time, as the educators help them to go more in-depth in biology, ecology, anatomy, and physiology.

Chalk Talk: Social Studies at Home

Children learn the basics about social studies at school, but this education can be enriched through some easy activities with their family. By providing children to world maps at home so when a child has a question about someplace, they can find the location on the map. Another activity is to find a suitable article in a paper or article to share with the child, or watch some of the educational programs on television to open up their eyes to the amazing things in the world. Invite the world into the home by hosting a foreign exchange student. This can be arranged through the school’s guidance office. Or the family can celebrate a holiday from another part of the world. Each of these activities help make a child’s social studies education more real and enjoyable.
