Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Suffield District Curriculum

Suffield Public Schools maintain high standards of education for all grade levels. In elementary, students are engaged in hands-on learning activities where students feel excited about learning. McAlister Intermediate School wants to inspire creative thinkers and a happy, safe place to grown and learn. They want to create a welcome open environment where parents feel happy to come visit their child at school and even eat lunch with them. The students are challenged to think in an in-depth way that will inspire them to learn more.

The standards focus on early literacy that will develop with each grade creating children who can read at a high level, but they can understand in depth and critically read. Writing and speaking are also emphasized. In math and science, students are challenged to think in depth as well and understand how their skills will apply to college and careers. Teachers are given time to provide students with this chance to think critically and understand the material before moving on.

Chalk Talk: How to Help Your Child Succeed in School

There is no doubt that parents have a lot on their plate along with a big helping of worry to go with it. They worry about what their kids are doing, who they’re spending time with, what they are eating, and at the top of that list, how are they doing in school? What then can a parent do? If your children are very young, you can start by making education one of the very top priorities in your family. This means your family schedules other activities around school, homework, and studying, not the other way around. It means you continually have dialog in your house about what they did in school that day and not let a simple one-word answer like “fine” suffice. Grades must be monitored and tutoring set up if needed.
