Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Suffolk District Curriculum

Suffolk elementary schools have a strong focus on English, Mathematics, History, and Science. Students are mentored in oral language, reading, and writing. Math builds upon a foundation in the topics of number sense, computation, measurement, geometry, probability, basic statistics, and basic algebra. Science involves logic, research, basic physics, planetary science, and earth science. These topics allow students the focused subject-area experiences that instill the skills and procedures of the subject.

History includes an emphasis on timelines, geography, civics, and economics. Suffolk middle schools offer core courses in English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Physical Education as well as exploratory options in Music, Technology, Arts, and Foreign Languages. Suffolk high schools operate on a block schedule, allowing student's time to go in-depth in their classes.

Chalk Talk: Helping Your Child Connect with Mentors

We have all heard, or asked, the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Now is the time to help your son or daughter explore career options. When they are young, help get them toys so that they can play/act in various professions. As they grow, seek out volunteer programs in careers they talk about or see if there is someone you know that they can work or shadow with for a day. Encourage them to explore their options and keep an open mind. Participate yourself in speaking at your child's schools about your experiences and work as that could help inspire one of their friends to follow in your footsteps.
