Sulphur District and Curriculum

The Calcasieu Parish Public School System has more than 33,000 students has been recognized for its academic excellence with a district wide accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sulphur District Curriculum

The new Common Core Curriculum that has been approved for use in the state of Louisiana and most states in the country will be implemented across the school district in the next couple of years. Common Core provides guidelines and sets academic expectations for students in the areas of English and Language Arts and Mathematics which are designed to build this knowledge over the grade span.

In preparation for the implementation of Common Core. All coursework in the area of English and Language Arts and Mathematics are being targeted for improvement with an emphasis on reading, writing, and core math subjects. In light of this focus, the educators are aware that students need elective and career-oriented courses that help them connect this core learning to their interests. One area of growth in academic offerings is technology, and students have opportunities to learn networking, programming, and design skills.

Keeping Informed: Recent Sulphur Educational News

  • SHARE Newsletter - The quarterly student and staff written newsletter SHARE is back in publication. The newsletter reports on news stories on a district wide basis and includes the latest happening in each school. Students and teachers who want to have their stories included in the newsletter are invited to send them for inclusion. The best stories will be featured and can include a school spotlight on a particular school.
  • Common Core - In preparation for the implementation of the state approved Common Core State Standards in district schools, the district recently undertook a survey of both administrators and teachers about the new standards. The results of the Common Core Survey were used to improve and adjust Common Core to the needs of the students in the Calcasieu Parish Public School System. The survey included teachers at the elementary school level and middle school teachers in the areas of Algebra I, Geometry, and English 1- 4.
  • Calcasieu School District Earns B Grade - The Louisiana Department of Education recently released its grades for school districts and individual schools in the state. Overall the public schools in the Calcasieu Parish School System received a B grade, with five individual schools receiving A’s, 25 B’s, 13 C’s, 13 D’s, and one school in the district received an F rating. In terms of improvement, the district almost doubled the number of schools reaching a B grade in the last year. The district’s goal is to improve individual school grades with all schools receiving a B or higher.

All kids enjoy art and being creative. Now kids can visit art website where they are invited to play art games or learn to paint or draw with the help of a computer. One such website is dedicated to the pop American artist Jackson Pollack. On the site at Jacksonpollack.org kids can see art that has been inspired by the artist Jackson Pollack including works that display his style of using paint spatter, paint drips, and even flinging paint at that canvas. The site also offers kids the opportunity to try this type of painting for themselves with the help of an interactive computer generated game. By moving the computer mouse children can create their own works of art and even change colors as desired. The interactive art design is also available in apps for use on other mobile devices such as iPhones and notebooks.
