Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sutherlin District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum in Sutherlin is based on Common Core State Standards. The goal of this curriculum framework is to develop students abilities in the key topics of the subject in a progressive fashion. Once students have learned how to read, they begin to develop comprehension skills that assist in their analysis and evaluation of texts. They are also taught research skills that help them with locating information, evaluating its quality, and properly incorporating the works and ideas of others into their own written work.

The writing portion of the Language Arts curriculum takes a workshop approach to the teaching of writing. Students learn the basics of writing sentences and paragraphs, and they learn how to craft essays and longer works. They write for creative, analytic, persuasive and informational purposes and learn how to develop their voice for each audience. Language and vocabulary skills are also expanded on through their writing.

Chalk Talk: Community Service

As a requirement of graduation, many schools now have community service as a facet of what students must do to be ready for graduation. There are a number of reasons for this: teaching kids how to be active in their communities, instilling project skills, and giving students the chance for real world collaborations. One of the most important things, however, about community service is that it should tie in to a students interests. If a student is artistic, working on a local mural can be a great opportunity that joins their interests with their efforts. If a student loves animals, volunteering at an animal shelter can be a terrific experience. Students should be creative and find opportunities that they will enjoy as that will maximize their efforts. Also, as they prepare for college, their community service work can be a real stand-out on an application and can be used as an experience to draw from for a good college essay. Overall, community service should foster a sense in each student that they have had a well-rounded experiential education.
