Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Suwanee District Curriculum

English language arts instruction emphasizes the following areas to be focused on: an increase in the use of nonfiction (informational) texts, the reading of complex selections with the necessary support, the incorporation of text-based discussions, the use of outside sources in writing, the instruction of academic (content-based) vocabulary, and the acquisition of real-world knowledge through reading.

Everyday Mathematics incorporates many problems based on everyday situations, which helps to engage students by connecting math to their lives. The program is centered on a spiral approach, meaning concepts are revisited often, so mastery occurs over time. Instruction is student-centered, as students engage in activities, discussions, games that allow for practice of skills, and problem-solving using multiple methods. Students learn concepts in the following areas: number sense, data analysis, geometry, measurement, algebra, and probability.

Frisbee demonstrations, contests, vendors selling pet fashion and food, rescue groups, pet clinics and workshops as well as food and beverages for humans are found all over the park. National and local artists perform at this “Woofstock,” culminating a true celebration of our four-legged friend. Bring the kids (and your dog) to be a part of this great event. Chalk Talk: Learning How to Focus

It can be hard for your child to focus on a subject he or she isn’t very interested in. Much of teacher instruction involves creating lessons that engage their students in the subject, topic or activity. Some students will be drawn into the instruction, others will day dream, doodle, talk or fidget. One way to learn if your student can focus is by asking their teacher(s) or tutor. Watching your child during homework time can also tell you whether your child is able to focus when expected. Keep in mind though during homework, they may be tired or distracted after spending all day at school. You are looking for your child to be able to stay “on task,” in the classroom, with their tutor and during the time you ask them to complete their homework. If you find your child is having a hard time with focus, it only takes practice to develop the ability. Practice focusing on an assignment or academic task with your child for a short period of time. With each assignment or task, add small increments of time to each session. Over time, your child will have the focus they need to learn and succeed as expected of them.
