Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sweden District Curriculum

Among the skills which students develop in Language Arts are traditional skills like reading and reading comprehension. Students develop more advanced literacy skills such as textual criticism and critical thinking. Math instruction is based on standards that require students to master concepts that they can use to solve problems that they encounter in classrooms as well as in everyday life. Among these concepts are abstract reasoning and problem analysis.

Health and wellness classes prepare students to make responsible decisions when it comes to their personal wellbeing. Healthy nutrition and the importance of regular health care are also discussed and students have the opportunity to participate in physical activity in physical education classes. Students are also introduced to a wide range of visual and performing arts, and have core academic courses in which arts-based opportunities are integrated into instruction.

Chalk Talk: What Is a Formative Assessment?

Formative assessment occurs on an ongoing basis and is often very informal. It takes place continually after the content is introduced. It may simply involve the teacher asking students questions or students completing in-class assignments such as worksheets or projects. Homework assignments are generally examples of formative assessments. Another type of formative assessment is a project, and one which involved independent work can help the student and teacher gauge skills that are often not assessable like time management, resourcefulness and creativity. This more informal type of assessment may or may not be graded; if it is graded, it usually counts as a smaller percentage of students’ grades than the summative variety. Formative assessments are critical so that teachers can monitor student understanding and make adjustments to instruction if and when necessary.
