Tay Valley District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ontario Curriculum is used throughout all schools in the province and offers a comprehensive academic framework and many innovative learning options for students. During the elementary years, the curriculum focuses on core academics. The literacy and communication development of students is critical to their overall success, and the English curriculum is designed so that students learn reading and writing strategies within all content areas. Students are expected to develop an understanding of meaning created through literature and increase their cultural
awareness through reading.

We currently cover the following Tay Valley-area school districts: Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tay Valley District Curriculum

The Math curriculum was designed so that certain knowledge and thinking strategies would be developed for each student. Students are meant to become mathematically literate, able to communicate in the language of math, use logic and models to reason abstractly, attend to precision, and determine the best method for solving a problem. Students develop spatial thinking in geometry, learn to understand algebraic operations, and use quantitative data to predict future outcomes.

In Science, students learn both content and processes of science. The early years are geared towards providing students with hands-on learning opportunities so they may explore common scientific phenomenon. This conceptual learning is soon backed up by the facts and principles underlying each topic. Students begin to study specific areas of science in middle and high school, and are offered classes ranging from computer programming to ecosystem studies.

Chalk Talk: Math for College Success

With the number of teens applying for college being so high, it is necessary for students to take the classes that will gain the attention of the admission office. Math is one of the subjects that is given attention. It is important to include classes that challenge the teen. These include Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II. In addition, they should include pre-calculus. If the teen has an interest in majoring in math or engineering they should also include classes in AP Statistics, AP Computer Science or Multi-Variable Calculus. If a teen is not math-oriented, or if calculus appears too difficult for them, they may want to look into trigonometry or analytic geometry.
