Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Terrace District Curriculum

The Math curriculum builds skills in numeracy, operations, shape and pattern recognition, and ways to manipulate numbers during the early math curriculum. This introduces students to the topics they will eventually study in-depth in their algebra and geometry courses. Statistics and probability is another focus of the curriculum. Students learn how to use mathematical functions to predict outcomes, and also acquire the ability to use statistical methods to analyze data.

In Language Arts, reading, writing, and speaking are taught in an integrated fashion using both fiction and non-fiction as texts for study. Writing is emphasized as are the processes involved in editing and revising, as well as the proper use of sentence structure, idea development, and word choice to create an appropriate mood. Students work on their verbal communication skills as well, learning to use appropriate language, nonverbal gestures, voice intonation, and eye contact to engage audiences. Developing active listening skills is a central component of the curriculum as well.

Chalk Talk: Developing Essential Literacies

Literacy is a very broad set of skills that means much more than just reading. Literacy means having a level of fluency and awareness about different text styles, and the different purposes for which people read and write. Literacy involves comprehension, analysis, interpretation, and critical thinking about the text or information read. In today's schools, teachers and administrators are looking for a broad set of literacy skills entailing math, science, technology, and global awareness. The Language Arts curriculum has been redesigned to increase the amount of non-fiction students read and opportunities to write non-fiction, analytic pieces as well. When students graduate on into college, or the workforce, they will constantly be confronted with technical or academic literature to read, and the goal is for them to have the literacy strategies to do so.
