Chalk Talk: Why Students Still Need Grammar

Students today are more plugged in that ever. The manner in which they communicate has changed as well, with texting, tweeting, and other short-form communications becoming ever more popular. Because writing well and using proper grammar isn’t part of the texting and tweeting world, some educational experts are concerned that children will lose their ability to read, write, and speak well. Using poor grammar may negatively impact a child’s ability to perform well on class assignments, exams, and standardized tests. Furthermore, college and job applications written using poor grammar may prevent a student from getting into the college they want or getting a job that they need. As a result, using poor grammar can give others the impression that children are not well educated. Conversely, using proper grammar can teach students important life skills such as logic, critical thinking, and effective communication.
