Chalk Talk: Students Need Public Speaking Skills

While speaking in front of a crowd isn’t everyone’s favorite activity, it is nonetheless an important skill for students to develop. Having the ability to speak to a crowd increases students’ confidence, and not just in their communication abilities. Strong public speakers tend to be more self-confident and have a positive opinion of themselves in general. Likewise, having the ability to speak in public gives students improved interpersonal communication skills as well. Public speakers know how to read people and respond to their feelings and emotions in an effective manner. They are likely to also develop leadership skills as their public speaking skills grow. People that can speak effectively are also more comfortable around others, making for improved relationships with classmates, teachers, and members of the community.
