Thurmont District and Curriculum

The Frederick County Public School uses Common Core Standards and Maryland Content Standards as the framework for instruction in all its schools. These curriculum documents provide a yearly progression of skills and knowledge in each content area that serve as assessable objectives to ensure each student is meeting the goals. The student assessments were developed and have been aligned to allow all students the opportunity to graduate from high school, be work ready and have the ability to receive higher education, and citizenship.

We currently cover the following Thurmont-area school district: Frederick County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Thurmont District Curriculum

The elementary curriculum includes activities such as making letters out of play-doh, counting marshmallows, and drawing picture books about themselves. There is also time during the day for free play where students move to different centers that allow them to explore other subjects such as careers, building blocks, and art materials. Students will be expected to read grade level literature with fluency while maintaining comprehension of the plot. By the time they begin middle school, they will be required to write multiple paragraph papers for different audiences while using correct grammar and mechanics.

The history of the state is also be taught paying special attention to the native tribes that first occupied the area. State agricultural, industrial products and knowledge economy are also a large part of this curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to gain first hand experiences on these topics during school field trips to local historical areas. They also learn about governments, governance and their role as citizens.

Chalk Talk: Conducting Research

When writing papers for that require conducting research to find evidence of a claim you are making, it is recommended to cite only peer-reviewed journals. Peer-review means that the articles have been looked over and verified by other professionals in the community; they also generally contain references to articles and books that might be helpful in the research being conducted. As you search for material, many articles only include an abstract—a brief description of the research—through subscription databases found in libraries, so checking the full text option will result in only articles whose full text is available being displayed. Sometimes, the search results need to be narrowed down farther, so advanced search options that allow users to look for specific words, and find search terms in article titles are available. Once a wide array of material has been found, the next step is to review and take notes relevant to the research being conducted. Using index cards to cite facts can be useful, and it is important to always keep track of references. Once the research is conducted, the writing process begins, and a presentation of new ideas is on its way to creation.
