Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tiffin District Curriculum

English and Math form the most integral part of the curriculum because they enable students to use the common reading, writing, and speaking skills along with problem solving and critical thinking to succeed in life. Students are encouraged through intensive Accelerated Reading programs to use their reading experiences and expand on their learning through projects, compositions, and essays. The curriculum from kindergarten through graduation is technology based so students can think critically using modern ways of learning.

Tiffin High schools offer a wide range of scholarships for students who excel in demonstrating outstanding academic and social leadership abilities and who will continue their studies at college or university. Music and athletic activities form a very important part of the curriculum for all students of all ages for extra-curricular activity, development of physical fitness, and social team leadership skills.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Listening Comprehension

Often students have difficulty in grasping the material taught due to poor listening comprehension skills. If teachers can teach the value of reading, writing and speaking as much as listening, students would progress more effectively in their studies. In fact, when you think about it, we listen twice as much as we speak so it makes sense to teach students to listen and to understand instructions in class. Poor listening skills are often reflected in students' behavior by jumping to conclusions and asking irrelevant questions without thinking through the instructions and visually seeing the logical steps to the process. When primary level students read, they need to be encouraged to sound out the words, and pause for reflection after each paragraph. Listening comprehension is an undervalued skill that many adults today take for granted and many students have failed to acquire, which reflects in the quality of their work.
