Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Troy District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum in Troy schools is a well-developed program that delivers rich experiences to children. Much of their learning is project based, including a ‘trip’ around the world in fourth grade that gets students using math as they read and navigate on a map. As students move on to middle school, they transition from numeracy skills to algebraic thought and practices.

The English and Language Arts portion places a strong emphasis on writing. Students also use engaging and diverse literature to learn and practice comprehension and analytic skills. Teachers develop literacy skills using a variety of methods, including independent reading, project based learning, and discussion. In addition to the academic curriculum, the district has a set of behavioral expectations for middle and high school students. The focus of this unique set of expectations is on teaching children how to work successfully with their peers.

Chalk Talk: What Are Academic Competitions?

The popularity of academic competitions is growing. Today, students can participate in several well-known events, including Quiz Bowl, the nationally televised It's Academic, and the Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) which is run by the Junior Engineering Technical Society. During these events, students compete in a variety of ways. Teams can compete in trivia competitions, they can create projects within a given time frame for judging at the event, or they can design and build projects over a number of months that are judged against their peers. Competition is no longer limited to the athletic field and these days there are many opportunities for students to compete scholastically.
