Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Troy District Curriculum

In English and Language Arts, the essentials of Common Core are that all students learn to read, write, listen and speak in a way that demonstrates a command of the English language. The program is progressive so that students begin the process of learning about literature, understanding key features in a story, and answering questions about what was read. This ability to analyze reading material and relate it to other writings and to themselves and the greater world is part of the ELA program throughout the rest of schooling.

In Math, students are taught using the basics of the Common Core Curriculum which is to provide training in mathematical problem solving, understanding of mathematical concepts, and using mathematical procedures. Students learn to apply the mathematical skills they learn to real world experiences. The goal is to have students that are mathematically literate and who know what type of mathematical skill to use when confronted with an everyday problem.
