Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tupelo District Curriculum

Beginning in kindergarten, Tupelo Public Schools instill in students an appreciation of the written word. By the time students reach sixth grade, they are able to take information that they read and use it to support a point. They are also able to take this information and use it to create a concise summary. They are able to evaluate material to decide on the validity of a subject and can use information that is or is not presented to support the author’s ideas.

The Mathematics program in the Tupelo Public Schools begins with an understanding of numbers and how they can be used to add, subtract, multiply and defined. In the early grades, students learn how to perform various operations and are introduced to composite geometric shapes. By the seventh grade, they can solve equations with a combination of fractions, percentages, and whole numbers. When students graduate, they are able to work with algebraic formulas, use rational and irrational numbers, use theorems in geometry, and use statistics and probability.

Chalk Talk: Preparing a Child for Middle School

The transition from elementary to middle school is a big step for children and parents. There are ways to help prepare a child for this step. If possible, try to schedule a visit to the school with the child so the student can become familiar with the layout of the building. Many schools offer an orientation time. If possible, have the child attend this session. It is a great time to meet with the teachers and the other students with whom the child will spend the day. Purchasing supplies before school starts can also calm the nerves and make the transition easier. If there are still concerns, parents can call a school counselor for assistance.
