Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Union City District Curriculum

Adopted in 1996, the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level from pre-K to the 12th grade. Union City Public Schools adheres to these content standards and develops curricula that meet or exceed the requirements of each standard in each of the nine core areas: math, science, social studies, language arts, health and physical education, languages, visual and performing arts, technology and 21st Century life and careers.

Of particular emphasis in the Union City Schools is preparedness for living and working in the 21st Century. Students gain knowledge and experience in various careers, ranging from architecture to finance to manufacturing. Exposing students to various career tracks – be they blue or white collar in nature – helps students to develop a better idea of what skills they possess and what educational or career track they’d like to pursue after high school. Students also gain valuable skills that allow them to be creative, collaborative and innovative members of society.

Chalk Talk: Using Technology to Help Kids Learn

Helping students to prepare for 21st Century living has to involve a heavy dose of using technology. Gone are the days of the teacher writing on the chalkboard – now teachers utilize interactive white boards to deliver lessons. In math class, students’ tablets can sync to the teacher’s white board, allowing the teacher to display Bobby’s work for the whole class to see. In English class, students can read their favorite book on their iPad and highlight text, dog ear pages and write in the margins without worry. Many schools provide iPads or laptops to their students, ensuring that all kids have access to the technology they need to be successful. Some classrooms across the country are even “flipping” over technology. In a flipped classroom, students watch videos, listen to podcasts and use apps to learn about concepts outside of class, so that class time can be devoted to robust discussion, hands-on activities and group work.
