Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Upper Providence Township District Curriculum

The first principle is Clear Standards, where students understand what they are expected to do. The second is Fair Assessment, were learning is evaluated and measured. The third is Curriculum Framework, where curriculum is developed. The fourth Instruction, where student needs are considered and accommodated through the teaching process. Fifth is Materials & Resources, where appropriate resources are utilized to enhance learning experience. Finally, the sixth value is Interventions, where a plan is in place for students who don’t make the progress required.

With this system in place, the Spring-Ford Area School District intentionally provides students with an education that not only proves consistent with state expectations, but gives students the foundation in education that they need to succeed in the future. Students start their education by studying Core subjects. With a solid foundation in these Cores of reading, writing, math and science, students are then able to apply their learning to other materials such as world languages, technology, the arts, and social studies.

Chalk Talk: The Value of Music Education

When students have the opportunity to learn music, it allows them to develop in ways that would be difficult to replicate in other circumstances. Students who study music learn to enjoy something that they would otherwise miss. They learn to process information in a different way. They learn to understand rhythm and a system of organization that stretches their mind. All of these things affect other areas of learning such as math and reading and speaking. In this case, the process of learning something different and unique fosters the learning of something else. Perhaps that is why students who study music often do better on test scores. In a similar way that working out helps you mow the lawn, music works out your brain and helps you in these other tasks. There are many things unknown about specific benefits of Music Education, but its effects can be seen in students.
