In Arkansas, students in grades 3-8 take a standardized state assessment in literacy and math, with fifth and seventh graders also completing the science test.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Van Buren District Curriculum

The curriculum used in the Van Buren School District provides for a series of learning objectives in each core subject that progress over the years until students are able to complete advanced work in any of their courses by high school. The objectives state what it is that children should know and be able to do in the different topics that are essential to each subject, such as which algebraic skills should be developed in math or the processes of investigation in science.

Van Buren School District has developed a technology plan and strongly emphasizes its integration into the curriculum. The goal is for technology to be implemented to help improve students’ literacy and math skills. Additionally, it should increasingly be incorporated in other subject areas as well. With the implementation of instructional technology, students should utilize a variety of tools and programs, use higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills, interact with their peers, share their work, and be assessed in different ways.

Keeping Informed: Recent Van Buren Educational News

  • Making Music - The students and 2009 Emmy Award-winning teacher of the Parkview Elementary Music Club recently got creative with their music video of “Misty Mountains Cold”—a song featured in The Hobbit. For the video, the students dressed as dwarves—beards and all. Their music teacher was impressed with their work ethic, teamwork, and costume designs. The video has been watched over 1,000 times on YouTube and has generated interest from people and organizations located outside of Arkansas, including a music teacher from Missouri and the National Association of Music Education.
  • Annual Community Events - The Van Buren Partners Club recently held its annual Christmas Carnival to support its K-12 athletes with physical or mental disabilities. The athletes were able to play games such as bowling and Plinko, color and make their own ornaments, eat pizza and snacks, and—most exciting of all—visit with Santa Claus. Partners Club used its funds and donations to purchase Christmas gifts for the athletes. Ninety athletes attended the carnival and had a great time.
  • Academy Learning - Not every student plans to enter college after completing high school or fits into the typical leveled classes, and Van Buren School District gives high school students the ability to select the roads less traveled on. The Freshman Academy, which opened in 2012, offers ninth grade students a greater choice of electives, a team-oriented approach, and skills to help prepare them for college and their careers. Van Buren High School sophomores who may be interested in science and medical fields in the future can get an early start through the Biomedical Science Program, which, in the past, has kicked off with a semester of a CSI-like experience.

Chalk Talk: Digital Storytelling

It can be difficult to foster a love for reading in children—especially those who struggle with reading. However, the explosion of instructional technology in the 21st century offers a promising tool for increasing interest and achievement in reading and writing: digital storytelling. Digital storybooks are more interactive than traditional print books, as features such as music, audio clips, animations, and custom images and photographs can be incorporated. Allowing students to create their own digital stories can result in a personal experience, as they can decide what to write about and the interactive features they would like to include. Of course, when they are creating these stories, they are practicing reading and writing! They are also appealing because they benefit diverse learning styles and allow for a multisensory approach. It will likely be a breeze for technologically savvy older students to create their stories, but the strategy can be adapted to be used at all grade levels as well as for any content area. Teacher-created digital stories can also be used as exciting hooks to get students interested in lessons. Digital storybooks can be created using programs such as Photo Story 3 or Movie Maker.
