Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Van Buren Township District Curriculum

The Mathematics curriculum in K-6th grade uses the Everyday Math program from McGraw-Hill. This program is built on the concept of spiral learning in which students are exposed to a standard at varying degrees throughout the grade levels until mastery is reached. Students practice number operation skills by playing games using cards in the Everyday Math Deck. Some of the most popular games include Multiplication Wrestling, Top-It, and Multiplication Baseball.

Students in middle school and high school use the Carnegie Math curriculum which was created by both scientists and mathematicians at Carnegie Mellon University. The success of this curriculum comes from the use of cognitive strategies that give the student ownership of their learning. In the textbooks and the software, there are visuals for students that show them what they are learning as well as their own progress in each standard. The program aims to deliver lessons in real-life contexts so students can see the importance of mathematics in the world.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Time Management

Time management is one of the most important skills a person must learn in order to be successful in both school and work. In early elementary school, the time is strictly managed by the teacher while students simply follow suit. However, once students enter the upper elementary grades they must master time management in order to be successful in school. Assessments are one of the first areas that this skill will affect. Simply put, if students do not allow themselves ample study time, they will not do well on the test. Other areas that time management can impact in school include projects, essays, homework, athletics, and clubs. If students do not have good time management skills before leaving high school, the same problems will follow them into college and their career. It will be hard to gain employment if one is late to an interview or submits a resume past deadline.
