Chalk Talk: Preparing for Middle School

Beginning middle school can be trying for most children. There are ways that parents can help make this transition easier. Primarily, communication needs to be open between the child and the parent. Next, try to arrange a visit to the new school. This allows the child to become familiar with the lockers, the location of the lunch room, the gym and the classrooms. At this same time, see if a meeting can be made with the new teacher. Talk with the child about the concerns they have about entering this new phase of education, but also help them to see the ways that they will be able to grow and excel in this new time. Finally, make sure that the child is prepared for the first day of school by taking them out for a school supply shopping trip.
