Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Victoria District Curriculum

Civics is an important part of the elementary social studies curriculum in Victoria. Students identify people that had a significant role in the development of our country, like George Washington, and explain how the actions of these historical figures led to the development of American politics. Learners examine the Bill of Rights as well, noting the protections it affords citizens of this nation. The system of checks and balances is also explored so students have an understanding of the means by which each branch prevents the others from having too much power.

In Social Studies, students explore the roots of our country and learn about history, geography, and society. In the Civics strand, the three branches of government are examined, with students noting the primary duties of each. The system of checks and balances that ensure no one branch becomes too powerful are explored as well. Learners explore other freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, such as freedom of religion. They learn about the time period during which the Constitution was developed and the types of changes it underwent before becoming codified as the law of the land.

Chalk Talk: Why Children Are Learning Code

Computer coding may not seem like something students need to learn unless they’re interested in becoming a computer programmer. But this is not the case. Jobs in the technology sector are growing very rapidly, and many of them require employees to have at least a working knowledge of code. Computer coding is an excellent way for young learners to learn math skills. It is also a great medium for helping children develop the analytical and problem solving skills that are so important for success in today’s world. By starting students out with coding at a young age – elementary school – not only will they have an increased knowledge of how computers work, they will also have a strong set of higher order thinking skills that will serve them in all aspects of life. In many classes, students also come up with incredibly useful and creative inventions.
