Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Virginia District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum details the decoding and analytic skills students need to be critical readers. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary development and students gaining strategies to understand unfamiliar words. In writing, elementary students begin to learn various ways to write – from explaining something in an expository format to various styles of creative writing. Narrative writing is also emphasized, with students using literary techniques to develop characters and plot to promote a sense of experience for the reader.

Motion is a primary topic of discovery for science students in Virginia. Students learn how to calculate the speed of an object that is traveling in a straight line. Learners also develop the ability to graph the object’s position as a function of both speed and time. The effects of various forces on a moving object are also explored. Students learn that when opposing forces are balanced an object either remains at rest or in constant, straight-line motion. Non-direct forces are examined as well, such as magnetic, gravitational, and electric forces.

The physical education curriculum helps students understand how to attain an optimal level of health and wellness. Students acquire fine and gross motor movements, such as balance and flexibility, and demonstrate proficiency in utilizing those skills for the purposes of health and fitness. Learners develop activity plans that prepare them for casual physical activities, such as games, as well as for organized sports. Conditioning, weight lifting, and proper nutrition are all aspects of a properly developed plan. Learning how to engage in exercise in a safe manner is also explored. Students learn the value of warming up and cooling down, eating right, and staying hydrated. Students work on devising fitness plans for non-school times as well, including after-school hours, the weekend, and holiday breaks. Learners also develop the ability to self-assess their progress and make corrections such that the progress toward their fitness goals is improved.
