Chalk Talk: Benefits of National Curricula

While there has been much debate surrounding the Common Core State Standards, there are a number of benefits to be derived from having a nationalized curriculum. Other countries have adopted nationalized standards, and their students’ performance demonstrates its effectiveness. Finland, New Zealand, and the Netherlands all have national curricula and their students consistently outperform U.S. students. Having a curriculum like Common Core brings all students throughout the nation up to the same speed. Families that are mobile would no longer have to worry about whether their child would be ahead or behind in his or her new school. Regardless of what state they are in or move to, the student will still be experiencing the same curriculum. National standards also help students develop essential 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
