Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Warren Township District Curriculum

Because students move from one district to another upon entering high school, both school districts in Warren Township have worked to ensure that their curricula align from top to bottom. Doing so means that the knowledge and skills students acquire in the lower grades are in line with the demands of the high school curriculum. Both districts adhere to the recommendations of state and national standards to further ensure curricular alignment.

The science curriculum includes a strand of study in earth systems science. This strand focuses on the forces that created and continue to shape our planet and solar system. Students study the way in which the earth interacts with other celestial bodies, namely the sun and the moon. Students learn about the forces of gravity and examine various objects in our solar system, including comets, asteroids and other planets. A study of the history of astronomy is undertaken, in which students critique old theories of celestial development and the study the galaxies in our universe using modern technology.

Chalk Talk: Why Math Education Is Important

Although many students graduate from high school never needing to again use the advanced math skills they acquired in geometry, trigonometry and calculus classes, the basic math skills and cognitive processes they acquired over the course of their secondary education will be used on a daily basis. Math enables us to calculate tips in our heads, work out a monthly budget and determine how long it will take us to get from point A to point B. But beyond these basic functionalities, math facilitates the development of problem solving and analytical skills so important for organizing information, testing hypothesis and thinking on one’s feet. Additionally, the critical thinking required to solve complex mathematical problems is the same kind of critical thinking required for everything from resolving conflicts with other people to determining the source of a leak in your house. Math, then, prepares us not just for the arithmetic problems we encounter, but also the problems we encounter in everyday life.
