Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Washington District Curriculum

In primary school, students develop reading fluency to aid their comprehension abilities. Students keep daily journals as part of the writing program, and use various basal programs to learn and practice reading skills. This is a foundation for later education in all the subject areas, and prepares students for the rigor of advanced academics. High school students can opt for programs including Honors Programs, Technical and Career Preparation, and electives in Communications, the Visual and Performing Arts, and Music.

Students are expected to follow individualized recommendations to choose the courses that will help them to best prepare for adult roles. For example, students who plan to join the military after high school can choose from a variety of leadership opportunities, or Advanced Science and Math classes in order to prepare for challenging skills training. The Washington School District High School program of study is unique in that students are encouraged to find their interests early and develop individualized programs towards their success.
