Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waterford Charter Township District Curriculum

Waterford Schools follow Michigan’s Grade Level Content Expectations and State Common Core Standards. At the elementary level, literacy instruction begins with foundational concepts like print awareness and phonics. When students become independent readers, the focus moves to reading comprehension and looking for deeper meaning in texts. Math is taught using a hands-on approach and is divided into categories including geometry and number operations. Middle school instruction builds on the foundations laid in elementary school.

At the high school level, the curriculum is based on the Michigan Merit High School Graduation Requirements whose outcomes are designed to prepare students for a 21st century global economy. In addition to challenging coursework, requirements include four years of English Language Arts instruction and algebra and geometry. Students can also choose to pursue dual enrollment courses at a local community college and receive college credit.

Chalk Talk: How to Keep Skills Sharp During School Breaks

There are some simple things you can do to help your child practice reading, writing, and math skills when school is out of session. Encourage everyday reading by letting your child pick out their own book. They will be more inclined to read if you do and since the goal is to get them to turn pages, it doesn’t matter what they choose so long as they are reading. Reinforce writing skills by getting your child a daily journal. Tell them how much you would love to read their thoughts and if they know they have an audience, they’ll be more likely to write. Lastly, play math flash cards games to improve speed and accuracy.
