Chalk Talk: Students Benefit from Later School Starts

Some school districts have adopted later start times to the school day. These later start times, which can be as late as 9:00 am, offer a variety of benefits to students. Because students are able to sleep more according to their natural patterns, they can sleep later and go to school refreshed. This negates the need for caffeine and other products to keep them awake, which can be detrimental to their health. Likewise, in schools that have adopted later start times, attendance has been greatly improved. This is especially true of attendance in morning classes. With improved attendance, student achievement is also boosted, with improved class grades a result. Some research has also shown that schools that have a later start time have fewer traffic accidents, which is likely due to kids being more awake and alert later in the day.
