Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Webster District Curriculum

The district provides a comprehensive balanced literacy program that includes Guided and Independent reading of engaging fiction and non-fiction text, and focused instruction in listening, speaking, writing and language. Teachers employ the instructional strategy of “scaffolding” or the gradual release of responsibility to teach reading and language arts. This approach encourages independent learning and helps build strong skill and content knowledge through modeled and guided instructional strategies.

The Common Core Standards for math requires Webster students to use critical thinking and fluency skills to solve real world problems. The district’s math program is a hands-on and inquiry based and designed to help students connect the concrete to the abstract by building a strong foundation in whole numbers, operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) fractions and decimals. Webster’s middle and high schools offer a diversified academic program that includes advanced placement courses, individual studies and a Young Entrepreneurs Academy.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Literacy

A home filled with a wide variety of high interest reading materials is a great way to promote a life-long love of reading and help children improve their reading skills. The following are some tips to help you create a cozy “reader friendly” home. Most importantly, have a variety of reading material readily available for all children in your home. Babies enjoy soft and hard picture books, books with mirrors and different textures. Children in elementary school enjoy both fiction and non-fiction books, poetry, dictionaries and reference books. Don’t just limit their choice to books. Your literary collection should include audio books, magazines, e-books, newspapers, comic books, and computer technology games that reinforce the core academic areas of reading, writing, math and science.
