Wellesley District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students in Wellesley are provided with an educational experience that combines traditional academic subjects with a range of enrichment programs designed for students with particular talents or interests. The curriculum establishes the expectations for learning in each subject and defines the yearly progression of learning that students will be on. In Math, areas such as numeracy, algebra and geometry, and mathematical data analysis are the broad areas in which students are taught. In Science, the topics of biology, earth and space science, chemistry and physics, the environment, and technology are all areas of instruction.

We currently cover the following Wellesley-area school districts: Waterloo Catholic District School Board and Waterloo Region District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wellesley District Curriculum

The English curriculum is developed around the goals of literacy and communication abilities and students read, write and create works of all genres. The standards and expectations for learning in all these subjects are specified in the curriculum; teachers may use different approaches to convey knowledge and students will have opportunities to pursue independent and interdisciplinary studies should they choose. These experiences form the basis of core subject learning and prepare students for the future.

Social Studies, History and Geography is organized so that students learn about different times and places but there is also an emphasis on broader conceptual knowledge in terms of understanding government, economics and society. At the secondary level, the focus shifts to Social Sciences and Humanities and allows students to explore topics and concepts they will learn more about in college. In high school, the topics focus on equity studies, family studies, philosophy, world religions, and general social sciences.

Chalk Talk: The Role of Academic and Applied Course Formats

When students enter grade 9, they are offered a choice of taking core academic subjects like Math, Science and English in either an Academic or an Applied Format. These two formats rely on the same curricular expectations, the difference is the purpose for which algebra or biology is being taught. Academic courses are designed to emphasize the theoretical aspects of the subject and require critical thought be applied to the topics. Applied courses are developed so that students see the practical applications of the subject and the ways in which the subject impacts real world situations. These options exist so that students can appreciate the purpose for their education and connect learning to their next steps.
