Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Bountiful District Curriculum

The curriculum in English Language Arts focuses on reading, writing and communicating, and integrates these areas so that students are constantly developing their skills in each. Students read a wide variety of texts, write creatively, write analytic responses, conduct research and learn how to evaluate resources, and learn how to discuss the ideas drawn from a text.

The Math curriculum begins with the basics of numeracy, numerical operations, pattern recognition, shape awareness and other topics which help students be prepared for more complex work in algebra, geometry, statistics and trigonometry. One primary goal of the curriculum is that students understand by reading a problem what will be the best way to solve it, with precision and using the most appropriate computational tools. Through this, students will develop their abstract, logical, and quantitative reasoning skills.

Chalk Talk: What Are Common Core Standards

The Common Core Standards are a curriculum framework for Math and Language Arts. They were designed in collaboration between educators, industry professionals and other stakeholders who wished to see a comprehensive curriculum that contained the key areas of learning in these subjects. The key objectives are detailed within the framework so that they are clear, but that teachers may determine the best way to deliver the objectives for their students. The goal was to outline the learning objectives in each subject so that student learning could build progressively from K-12 and for students who move between districts, they do not lose out on the flow of learning. Other goals included the strengthening of teaching in these subjects so that every student is ready for college or a career of their choice.
