West Jordan District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Jordan School District follows the Utah Core Standards, which are derived from the Common Core, a nationwide set of standards for achievement in English Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition, the Jordan School District has special goals and plans for students in all grades to support their individual learning needs, to be challenged at their level and build their skills.

We currently cover the following West Jordan-area school districts: Granite School District and Jordan School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Jordan District Curriculum

At the middle and high school levels, these standards are expressed in a series of units that allow progression from skill to skill and continuity across classrooms. Teachers are supported in meeting these standards with a wide variety of supplemental materials, including suggested lesson plans, strategies to model, and recommended materials guides. Many elementary schools in the Jordan School District offer immersion programs in Chinese, French, and Spanish.

In Language Arts, literacy and communication are centrally focused upon as they support learning in all areas. Similarly, in Math, a wide range of problem-solving skills are expected so that students may understand, by looking at a problem, what will be the best method to solve it. In Science, inquiry-based skills are focused upon and students are taught processes for establishing, testing and communicating their scientific findings. In the curriculum, depth of knowledge is emphasized over breadth of knowledge, enabling stronger critical thinking for students.

Chalk Talk: Technology in the Classroom

Teaching students how to use technology is an essential component of contemporary education. On the one hand, learning how to use computers and other technology is a skill unto itself, which students will need to have in order to continue their education and get careers in the fast-changing 21st century marketplace. However, educational technology can also support students in learning traditional subjects, such as math, science, and reading. It can also assist teachers, who are able to use technology to simplify their work in the classroom and present material to students in an engaging way. Technological literacy is a must for any student today, and is a goal schools work for.
