The West Vancouver School District provides traditional and innovative learning opportunities for its students. The core curriculum is based on designated objectives for learning in each subject, as set out by the Ministry of Education. There are also music and arts programs that give students the chance to perform and exhibit their talents. High school programs offer students a rigorous, pre-college path that provides all requisite skills for success in college and courses that prepare a student to enter a career field as well. Students are encouraged to focus their education in subjects and experiences in line with their future goals.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Vancouver District Curriculum

The World Languages offerings allow students to either take on an immersion program or take shorter courses in a language. Grammar and vocabulary are important parts of the learning, and once mastered students begin to work on their conversational and reading skills. Non-verbal communication is an important component of learning a second language as well. As a result, students learn culturally appropriate gestures that promote understanding and respect for the cultures associated with the language under study.

The Social Studies curriculum introduces students to important topics in history, geography, government, economics, and culture. In their historical studies, students acquire the ability to evaluate historical information for bias and accuracy. In geography, children learn about the interconnected nature of societies and their immediate environment. The study of economics includes an evaluation of supply and demand, while in civics, students learn about the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

Chalk Talk: Understanding by Design

Many school districts have taken on the incorporation of an Understanding by Design model for students in all grades, and the creation of common pre- and post-tests across grade levels and content areas. Understanding by Design involves a “backward design” curriculum framework, meaning that the student outcomes (understandings) and assessments are established before activities, materials, and instructional methods. Educators should “teach for understanding,” focusing on big ideas and essential questions. The goal is to bring about student understanding by creating lessons, unit plans, activities, and formal and informal assessments that bring together a topic from start to finish and allows the students to see the purpose for what they are learning.
