Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Warwick District Curriculum

The GSE for Science encompass the three domains of life, earth and space, and physical science. Each domain includes enduring knowledge statements which express the foundational concepts for each domain and the benchmarks that should be accomplished. For example, a student in a life science course will be expected to identify how matter and energy are processed in an ecosystem and the uniqueness of humankind in the solar system.

The GSE for Mathematics are divided into content strands which are further separated by grade level. The four content strands are Number and Operations, Geometry and Measurement, Functions and Algebra, and Data, Statistics, and Probability. Standards for problem-solving, reasoning, and making connections are embedded into the content strands. As an example, the Number and Operations strand includes the expectation that students should be able to perform mental mathematics to subtract or add whole numbers of twenty or below by the third grade.

Chalk Talk: Staying Focused

Though it may be tempting to watch a television show or chat with a friend online as you do your homework assignment, research indicates that humans do their best work when they focus on one thing at a time. Switching your focus from your work to a distraction can cause you to make careless errors or to forget to include an essential element. An additional benefit of focusing on one task at a time is that the task usually takes less time. To motivate yourself to stay focused, use the potential distraction as a reward for completing a project or for working undisturbed for an hour. For example, once you have completed all of your homework assignments for the evening, you can allow yourself an hour of videogame playing as a reward. With this plan, you will be able to produce high quality work and still have time to relax.
