Westminster District and Curriculum

Elementary school education is provided for students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade in the Carroll County Public School System. The major areas of study at the elementary level are Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Integrated Language Arts. In Elementary English and Language Arts, students build on their abilities as they progress through the elementary grades. Students learn to read using phonics and other reading methods. As students progress they learn to improve their vocabulary, and their ability to write and use language. Students learn to read text, analyze and discuss it to develop their reading comprehension skills. Learning how to locate and use research materials is also part of the program.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Westminster District Curriculum

The Carroll County Public School System uses the Maryland State Curriculum as their foundation for teaching Math. Mathematics at the elementary level includes a focus on learning numbers, counting, mathematical processes such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students also learn the base ten numbering system, how to solve word problems, and the basics of Algebra and Geometry.

At the middle school level, students move toward an understanding of higher level mathematics, and the comprehension of abstract mathematical concepts. Middle School students learn measurement tools, equations, fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and basic geometry and algebraic concepts. High school students are required to take at least three credits of Math including Algebra and Geometry. The focus in Math is to help students learn to use and apply mathematical concepts in real life.

Keeping Informed: Recent Westminster Educational News

  • Blue Ribbon Schools - Century High School, in the Carroll County Public School System was named one of the state's six Blue Ribbon Schools. The Blue Ribbon Schools program is administered by the Maryland State Department of Education. Schools that qualify have to demonstrate either major improvements in Mathematics and Reading assessments or produce consistently high scores in Mathematics and Reading.
  • Family Forums - Family Forums are being conducted at the Charles I. Ecker Boardroom at the Board of Education offices and will feature Superintendent of Carroll County Public Schools, Stephen Guthrie. The Superintendent will speak on topics such as the future of Carroll County Public Schools.
  • Technology Education Teacher Excellence Award - Jim Dietrich, a Technology teacher at Liberty High School has been selected to win the High School Technology Education Teacher Excellence Award. This award is presented annually to high school technology teachers who exemplify excellence in technology teaching in the State of Maryland. Mr. Dietrich has been teaching in the Carroll County Public School system for more than 16 years.

Chalk Talk: Science Resources for Students

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) provides an educational website for children, parents and teachers. The NASA Education Program provides information and games and educational tools to help further the education of students in the subjects of science, engineering, technology, and mathematics. The website is meant to help prepare and inspire future astronauts, scientists, and engineers for tomorrow's workforce. For younger children there is a NASA's Kid's Club with fun play and learn activities and stories. There is also home work help for all young students. In addition, young people can check out the Space Station and enter contests such as designing a space settlement or being able to host amateur radio contact with astronauts at the Space Station.
