Westport District and Curriculum
Westport Public Schools strive to maintain a high standard of education for all students. Foreign language is begun in kindergarten instead of in high school. Each school places importance on the fine arts as well, creating well-rounded and high achieving students. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Westport District Curriculum
Beginning in kindergarten, the district provides a hands-on learning approach and begin with an importance placed on literacy but with a balanced approach. In addition, kindergarteners are taught Spanish, art, and technology. During the middle school years teachers use a team-teaching approach. This allows the teachers to better get to know the students and can adjust lessons or assessments together to best meet the needs of all students.
Students at the high school level continue to receive a well-rounded education. From advanced placement to athletics, students at Westport High School have received numerous awards over the years and consistently perform at the top of the state, including an acclaimed drama and arts department. There are also a wide variety of advanced, gifted, and special education courses as well as extracurricular options available to better prepare all students for college.

- Book Club for Kids and by Kids - The Spaghetti book club at Coleytown Elementary School is designed to promote reading and literacy. The book club consists of books chosen by the students for other kids creating an environment where students learn to love to read.
- Making Math Count - Incorporating technology, games, and math, this online program helps elementary students hone their math skills. There are a wide variety of lessons for all age levels so that students can practice their math skills on the go.
- Technology at Home - Westport Public Schools have a very strong focus on technology integrated into the curriculum. Through a vast online resource system, students have access to a huge amount of additional educational resources at home.

Though teaching is still a honorable profession, and when a teacher tells someone what they do for a living they are often met with smiles and awe, a teacher’s hard work often goes unnoticed. So, while a week of teacher appreciation is great, appreciate a teacher everyday. After all, all other professions are taught by teachers.
