Whitby District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum used in the schools in Whitby is both traditional and adaptive. It provides students with a traditional framework in subject-area learning but also provides a wide range of programs and courses that have been initiated through changes in the workplace and student interests. The proliferation of Environmental Science or International Education courses is an example of how academic options have increased and students have options they can use to develop ideas about what they would like to pursue in advanced learning or workplace pursuits. Math, Science, English, History/Social Studies, Arts, and the World Languages courses all offer different perspectives into how the world works and also provides important knowledge and concepts.

We currently cover the following Whitby-area school districts: Durham Catholic District School Board and Durham District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Whitby District Curriculum

With the foundation provided by the Ontario Curriculum, students are prepared to enter into a community where they can support their local or global interests and pursue learning and work opportunities that they consider important. The enrichment and extracurricular opportunities take the learning experience a step further and allow students the chance to step into their future while still in a supportive learning environment.

Math, Science, and English have become increasingly focused upon subjects because of the boom in technology and communication. Technology courses in systems, design, and communication use the knowledge which students develop in Math, Science and English and offer students a chance to create and innovate. Students develop both the processes for solving technological challenges and also the means to create meaningful messages and expression using technology.

Chalk Talk: Applying to College

Applying to college is a lengthy process involving course selection, letters of recommendations, college essays, and deciding which college is the best fit. First of all, the teen’s high school curriculum should be planned when they are freshmen. Without a formal letter of recommendation, colleges won’t take the application seriously, so it’s very important that it be included in the application packet. Visiting the college is important and speaking with current students can give a prospective student good insights. Ask students at the college what they like the best about the school and the least. Find out what they would tell themselves if they were a beginning freshman at this school. Check out the departmental sites for classes and professors, event sites and the admission office. With this knowledge in hand, the parent and teen will be more prepared for this important time.
