Chalk Talk: Benefits of Arts Education

The arts are a critical component of a well-rounded education. Not only do the arts provide students the opportunity to explore traditions and cultures from around the world, they also help improve school climate. Schools that have integrated the arts into their curriculum report far fewer discipline referrals and improved student achievement. Students show gains in several subjects, including in English and math. When arts is an integral component of the learning day, students experience higher literacy rates, improved word fluency, and better writing skills. In math, arts students consistently outperform their peers on standardized tests, especially on measures that involve computation skills, estimation skills, and fractions. The arts foster the growth of creativity as well. Being able to think outside the box, analyze information, compare outcomes, and engage in self-critique are skills essential for the study of the arts and for success in life and work.
