Educating Our Parents: Understanding the White Plains District Curriculum

The public schools in White Plains follow the state standard for curriculum which is the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) for all grades. The Common Core Standards have been established to help standardize curriculum across the nation to ensure that all students receive the same level of education. They require students to show evidence of their thinking and be able to communicate in any subject. The curriculum concentrates on the same basic concepts while they advance to more challenging levels with increased opportunities for analytic and reasoning tasks.

The Common Core Curriculum for Language Arts applies the development of literacy and writing skills to History, Social Studies, Math, Science and technical curriculum. All students work on learning how to use critical thinking to analyze textual material to become able to discuss and write about their subjects. All students in New York must pass Regents exams in English, Global History, U.S. History, Science and Math.

Chalk Talk: Learning about Modern Art

If your child is showing signs of being a budding Picasso it is never too early to introduce them to the concepts of contemporary art. At the Destination Modern Art website, young people will find an interactive introduction to the Museum of Modern Arts collection and the PS 1 Contemporary Art Center in Manhattan. The interactive site starts with an alien in a spaceship who beams down as the tour guide to the museum. There are games and activities to take part in as the child learns about artists and their works of art including Picasso and Van Gogh.
