Willington District and Curriculum

Willington Public Schools provides local students with a comprehensive, rigorous, and 21st century learning experience. Using the Connecticut Common Core State Standards, students in the Willington Public Schools are assessed through the Connecticut Smarter Balanced Assessment in Grade 3 through 8. In addition, students are assessed using the CMT/CAPT Science in grades 5, 8, and 10. These are designed to help show strengths and weaknesses and are used by teachers to plan their instructional goals.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Willington District Curriculum

Using the Common Core Standards Initiative as the framework, Willington Public Schools offers a well-rounded education for its students. Elementary students are taught in subject areas that include mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, physical education, music, and art. The schools are are diligent about incorporating computers and mobile learning technology in instruction.

In science, students account for how biological diversity is the result of evolution. Technology courses help kids become proficient in the use of computers and computer programs in the context of next generation career areas. Students also acquire an understanding of natural processes, such as natural selection and evolution. A study of basic scientific laws is also undertaken, including a discussion of Newton’s laws of motion and how they predict the behavior of objects. Students learn to observe phenomena, collect data, and interpret that data to increase their understanding of scientific events and procedures as well.
