Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Willoughby Hills District Curriculum

The language arts program helps students understand how to derive meaning from written texts and to create meaning with their own writing. Students utilize the context of the writing to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases as well. Using two or more texts, students develop an understanding of the craft and structure of literature by comparing various works. Learners look for differences in the way that characters are developed, as well as how authors can use humor or other emotions to develop their story.

The music program offers students the opportunity to learn how to perform vocal or instrumental music. Students explore various types of music, and various instruments are introduced. Learners examine aspects of music that impact its sound and style, such as tempo, dynamics, tonality, and meter. The key signatures and major scales are learned, facilitating students’ ability to sight-read music. Students also look at music in a historical context, studying composers and musicians that are representative of major movements in music.

Chalk Talk: The Role of "History Months" in Schools

No matter how much racial diversity a school has, it is essential to celebrate Black History Month in the classroom. Students need to understand the inequality that used to exist in their country and celebrate the African Americans who rose above the discrimination to greatly contribute to our history. Literature offers a great way for students to read about famous African Americans, while they can of course learn about these important figures in their history classes. In science and math, they can be exposed to highly regarded African American scientists and mathematicians. Their learning should go beyond extremely famous African Americans such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman. Students may also learn about famous African American athletes or singers who made breakthroughs in their fields. One final note: It is important for the contributions of African Americans to be acknowledged and celebrated all the time and not just in February.
