Winters District and Curriculum

The district uses the objectives-driven curriculum known as the Common Core and the California Content Standards. Each subject has their own curricular plan, but the overarching goal is that learning in one subject supports learning in other subjects as well. The curriculum was designed out of a concern that previous curricular frameworks were not preparing students for the challenges of an increasingly global, technological, and scientific workforce.

Math education has been framed so that during the elementary years students learn a number of approaches to measuring quantities, solving different types of math problems, or understanding knowledge like fractions or percentages. In middle school, the skills become more complex and focused so that they are prepared for the requirements of high school in Algebra and Geometry. Students will be expected to know how to use expressions, equations, models, proofs, and other means to reason through problems.

Science, which also encompasses areas of technology, serves the goal of teaching students how to use processes of inquiry and experimentation to find answers. This is accomplished through the topics of biology, chemistry, physics, earth and environmental science, and other topical courses which schools are able to offer. There are more courses in pre-engineering that in the past so that more students have a college-bound path in that subject.

We currently cover the following Winters-area school district: Winters Joint Unified School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Winters District Curriculum

Language Arts is designed to support literacy in all subjects and to teach students meaningful communication skills. Students read for comprehension and to be able to analyze the material. Texts which are used cover all types of fiction and non-fiction. Students are expected to respond to text in writing, and to develop writing skills to write for a range of formal purposes. The conventions and proper usage of the language is also taught so that students are able to communicate with clarity.

All these skills can be taught through a variety of instructional approaches, the curriculum does not specify what approach a teacher needs to take. Some students will excel in project-based and inquiry-guided modes, other students require a direct instruction approach. Students will be exposed to all these modes and should look for what teaching approaches work best.
