Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Woodbridge District Curriculum

Language arts on the elementary level are presented to students using reading and writing workshops as well as a balanced literacy approach. Through read-alouds, shared reading and discussion, students are exposed to a variety of literature. Students also develop their writing skills through workshops which focus on the conventions of writing, the craft of writing, spelling and analyzing literature. The reading and writing workshop model is also used on the middle and high school levels and gives students a chance to develop authentic literacy skills.

Woodbridge implements the new elementary school mathematics curriculum, Everyday Mathematics. This research-based curriculum was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Everyday Mathematics implements a problem-solving approach which explores mathematics beyond arithmetic, uses everyday situations, offers frequent practice of basic skills and revisits concepts regularly.

I believe that everyone can succeed in life if he/she receives the right education regardless of their background. While everyone is unique with his/her ideas, showing them the right track can be the hardest step. Once a student comprehends the basics of the subject, there is no telling how far that student can go.
The student’s needs determine the direction of the class. A teacher must be attentive to and hone in on any deficits the student has so that those areas can be strengthened. Tuning in to the student’s deficits will provide a road map to success.
Students need warmth, engagement and humor as much as they need an organized teacher who knows her stuff. I aim to strike a balance between solid, scaffolded curriculum and a light-hearted, caring approach to teaching. I think there is a lot of unexplored potential for a more interdisciplinary approach to teaching English and Language Arts than what is normally used, and as a lifelong learner who is interested in many different subjects and types of knowledge, I try to meet students where they are and address what interests them.

Chalk Talk: How to Communicate with Teachers

The parent-teacher relationship is influential in a child’s education. It is important that parents and teacher communicate effectively in order to ensure students receive the help they need. Parents should make sure they give a clear and accurate picture of their child to the teacher (i.e.: allergies, vision issues, behavioral concerns, etc.). They should find out what is the best way to contact their child’s teacher, and also if there is a class website or page. Notes should be as brief as possible and to the point. If notes do not receive a response, a phone call is a good way to follow up. Parents should also keep abreast of their child’s homework assignments and review any paperwork and tests that come home. If parents keep the lines of communication open and clear, they can be good partners in their child’s academic life.
